PHP is a scripting language for programming on the side of the server known as Hypertext Preprocessor. It was invented by Rasmus Lendorf in 1995 for personal needs. How does PHP actually work? Programmers write PHP scripts which are stored on a web server. The web server contains a PHP interpreter which translates the code – a dynamic web site is created that can  be seen by the user in his internet browser. The web site can be created on the data base (eg. MySQL data base). When the client sends a request to the web server for a dynamic PHP web site, the server is configured to recognize the extension .php and forwards the PHP files to the interpreter who further forwards the SQL request the the server.

After processing the request the results are returned to the server and are finally shown in the client’s browser.Although it is represented as the programming language on the side of the server, PHP is much more than that. To begin with, it can be used in all more important operation systems – Linux, Unix, Windows, MacOS and it supports today’s web servers. Today PHP supports procedural and object-oriented programming and the user has a complete freedom of choice.

There are three main fields of PHP use:

• Programming on the side of the server – already mentioned main field of application. In order to function, it is necessary to have  the PHP interpreter, web server and web browser. The code is carried out on the web server on which PHP is installed.
• Command line programming – PHP script can be done without a server or a browser. This type of use is ideal for scripts which are regularly done by using cron (Unix/Linux) or Task Scheduler (Windows).
• Desktop application writing – although not the best choice for this type of work, some advanced programming possibilities on the side of the client can also be used for  designing desktop applications (by using PHP-GTK).

One of the most important characteristics of PHP is the support for many databases. Programming web sites which use databases is very simple thanks to PHP.  PHP is most commonly used in combination with MySQL databases. The communication support with other services by using protocols such as LDAP, IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, HTTP, COM and many others shouldn’t be forgotten.
